AISA is a warning system for use at dangerous alley crossroads where vehicles and pedestrians often collide.
Many alleys are used by both pedestrians and cars, and some incorporate crossroads. When cars speed through alleys, pedestrians can find themselves in dangerous situations. The road safety facilitates installed in complex alley crossroad contexts do not always prove effective. Statistics of car accidents in Korea for a five-year period from 2003 indicate that over forty per cent of victims were pedestrians who were walking in alleys, and most of them were children and senior citizens. AISA is a safety system designed for use at alley crossroads or crosswalks where there is no footpath and a high potential for accidents.
The AISA system is installed on the ground. It has a rounded shape to impart a friendly image, and is made with titanium or heat-treated steel for durability. Its spherical form disperses direct forces. The system uses a sensor camera to recognise when a pedestrian (or bicycle) and a car are approaching the crossroads from different alleys, and provides an alert to each moving object.
The alert consists of various forms of light signal. If a car is approaching from the right, three LEDs will flash rapidly from right to left. If a pedestrian is approaching from the left, one orange LED will flash slowly from left to right. The colour of the LED indicates the degree of danger. The number of LEDs flashing indicate the size of the object. The speed of the flashing indicates the speed of the object. |
