Making clever use of its context, this project uses the wind velocity caused by moving vehicles to generate electricity for signage, street lights and safety signals.

There is increasing realisation of the advantages of harnessing the wind for the production of electricity. Geography can hinder its use, however, with some locations simply lacking wind strength. This project combines wind power generation with the common road median strip, harnessing the wind velocity caused by moving vehicles. An internal vertical wind turbine is protected by fibre-reinforced plastic. The electricity generated can be used to power traffic safety signals, information signage (via LCD) and street lights. This project offers the potential to enhance safety on the roads using a sustainable resource.
